Aware that the issue of hunger is growing among children and families, Palms seeks to anticipate need and respond in sustainable ways.
Providing Food To Those In Need
Food Program for Children in the Community
When school guidance counselors affirmed an increasing issue of hunger among the Beaches children especially during the summer months, Palms members established Kid’s Kitchen, a unique summer food program for children living in the community. A nutritious, easily-prepared menu was created providing six meals per child for a weekend. The meals are distributed from the The Gail Baker Center (formerly Donner) in Atlantic Beach where, during the week, children are served a nutritious lunch during the out of school season. This program began in 2005 and serves over 130 children 6,240 meals each summer. Palms members volunteer a necessary service each summer by purchasing and packaging the appropriate amounts and nutritious food in small portable bags.
Help Meet the Needs of the Homeless Adults
Mission House is the only day facility to help meet the needs of the homeless adults in the beaches area through compassion, faith, and programs designed to provide assistance at an individual level. Today, our number one goal is to assist homeless people off the streets and back to productive and self-sufficient lives. For more information, click here.
Mayport Market is a collaborative ministry between Palms Presbyterian Church, BEAM (Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry) and Mayport Elementary School. Volunteers from Palms Presbyterian pack food items from BEAM on a truck and transport items to Mayport Elementary. At Mayport Elementary, Palms volunteers unload the items and set up a pop-up food pantry. Members of the Mayport Elementary and greater Mayport community then shop free of charge. Mayport Market takes place 1-2 times a month during the school year. Mayport Elementary is a Title 1 school with 94 percent of the children on free or reduced lunch.
