Adult Education

Palms Adult Education Ministry Team recognizes that we all are in different places in our faith journey. Whether you are just starting to ask questions and seek understanding, or if you are a self-professed Bible study fanatic, we provide opportunities for your continued growth.

Jesus’ disciples sat at his feet learning about the life of faith. This foundation enabled them to live their faith as they were sent out to serve God’s mission in the world. Through group studies on Sunday mornings and throughout the week, we also seek to learn from Jesus and one another about who we are and how we are to live as Christ’s disciples.

We want to create safe space to discuss difficult issues of faith and doubt, to encourage one another in our journeys, and to be nurtured by the grace of Jesus Christ.

Adult Sunday School Classes Run Through Lent

Nurtured to Serve

This year our Journey to Discipleship will focus on the theme: Nurtured to Serve. We will spend time thinking about how our Palms mission statement is also a personal mission statement for each of us on our journey. Search for the class that helps you think about how you are nurtured to serve in your life at Palms - and beyond! Classes are held Sundays at 9:40 a.m.

Prophets - Led by Dr. Tom Walker. Over the years prophets have been called by God to speak to God’s people. Each of these prophets imaginatively challenged prevailing perceptions about and understandings of God’s ways in the world. Their voices continue to push and engage us and our world today. Join us each week as we look at a different prophet from the Old Testament, their historical context, and how they provoke us into faithfulness. Room 204.

Insurrection - Led by Rev. Andrew Kukla. The title of Peter Rollins’ book is a play on the word, Resurrection, and is meant to challenge a luke-warm faith to ignite world changing transformation, for this is what Jesus rising from the dead begins. This class will use video segments from Rollins, and his book for those who wish to read further. Rollins will lead us to examine much of what we say we believe to see if it lines up with our calling to live radically transformative lives in the world. Room 202.

Soul Feast - Led by Ginny Vorsanger. Last year our small group curriculum leaned heavily on this book from Marjorie Thompson with great success. This year Marjorie will be our visiting theologian in late-February. This class will return to a deeper study of Soul Feast as it invites us to reflect on the many aspects of Christian spiritual life. Are you opening yourself to the right practices to nurture your faith and growth? Room 207.

The Me I Want to Be - Led by Barbara Bishop and Howard Taylor. In the past we have offered a couple different classes from John Ortberg including the popular study, If You Want to Walk on Water, You Have to Get Out of the Boat. This book by Ortberg invites us into discernment of our gifts with particular emphasis to some wisdom on the mindset and character we need to have if we are going to embrace the calling God has for us and find peace within us. Room 203.
